Background of Rehabilitation Research, Evaluation and Education Services (RREES)


RREES is a consulting firm dedicated to providing state of the art management information and clinical educational services to the rehabilitation, insurance, workers' compensation and public sectors. Its mandate is to continually research, develop and evolve products, methodologies and services that serve to establish and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of rehabilitation facilities. RREES is currently in the final phase of implementing a comprehensive outcome measurement system ROMS for outpatient facilities to guide and track the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, traumatic brain injury, chronic pain and associated psychological conditions. RREES employs a strong interdisciplinary team of academic and clinical research scientists/consultants and information technology professionals to achieve its mandate.

Executive Director

Dr. J. Douglas Salmon, Jr. holds a Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and a doctorate specializing in rehabilitation and neuropsychology. He is the author and co-author of numerous rehabilitation assessment and outcome evaluation instruments including the Rehabilitation Checklist; the Rehabilitation, Neuropsychological and Health Status Inventory; and the Pre/Post Condition Life Events Checklist, among others. He is also the author of Recovery from Whiplash, Concussion and Brain Injury, the Rehabilitation Education and Coping Series, and treatment resource materials including the Neuropsychological Evaluation Summary & Rehabilitation Strategies Series, among others. Dr. Salmon has held senior clinical and administrative positions at the clinic and corporate levels overseeing brain injury, psychological and complex injury rehabilitation services. He is a recognized DAC (Catastrophic Impairment, Medical/ Rehabilitation, Disability, Residual Earning Capacity) examiner and has also been on the graduate research staff with the University Centre for International Rehabilitation (Michigan State University). His multidisciplinary private practice consults widely to public and private rehabilitation clinics, agencies and case management firms for the purposes of clinical consultation/treatment, program development and training. He is an active researcher in an array of rehabilitation areas and has presented research and theoretical papers to numerous local, national and international forums. 

Director of Operations and Information Technology

Samuel E. Erlenbach holds a Masters of Science in Engineering with a focus in artificial intelligence. For 12 years, he has worked in software project development in aeronautics, telecommunications and manufacturing, primarily in Silicon Valley, in the capacities of software engineer and project consultant. His primary strengths lie in the areas of software design, engineering, trouble-shooting and project management. He has overseen the development of RREES’ flagship software application the Rehabilitation Outcome Measurement System (ROMS), and evolved its unique fax based infrastructure. Mr. Erlenbach is responsible for the implementation, day-to-day operation and evolution of the ROMS service. He also oversees the Information Technology division of the company.

Senior Clinical Research Advisor

Dr. Marek J. Celinski has been a rehabilitation psychologist and a provider of neuropsychological services in his private practice focusing on rehabilitation and assessment of head injury since 1977.Previously he was the Senior Psychologist and Consultant to the Head Injury Program at the Downsview Rehabilitation Centre (WCB) until its closure. Presently, he remains a part-time consultant with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Dr. Celinski studied under Alexander Luria in Moscow and Prof. Egon Weigl in Berlin. He has presented at national and international conferences, and has published more than 50 papers and book chapters on the subjects of clinical psychology, rehabilitation, neuropsychology and hypnosis. He has authored and co-authored a number of clinical and rehabilitation tests and materials currently in various stages of publication and development with RREES. These activities include his having co-authored (with Dr. Salmon) the Rehabilitation Survey of Problems and Coping, the Rehabilitation, Neuropsychological and Health Status Inventory, and the Headache and Dizziness components of the Rehabilitation Education and Coping Series.

Consulting Research Scientist

Dr. Lynda Mainwaring is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Health at the University of Toronto. Her primary areas of research involve the understanding and discernment of coping processes in rehabilitation and sports injury recovery. Her teaching and graduate student supervision includes involvement with physiotherapy and occupational therapy professionals at the post-graduate level. Dr. Mainwaring is currently one of the principal investigators on a study of mild traumatic brain injury in varsity athletes. This concussion program is a collaboration between researchers at the University of Toronto and the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Other ongoing research includes a study of the psychological consequences and functional limitations of hand injuries in injured workers. Dr. Mainwaring is also a registered psychologist with special interest in rehabilitation, health, sports and dance psychology, and for years had been the consulting psychologist to the Hand and Amputee Program of a provincial rehabilitation centre. She had consulted to Drs. Salmon and Celinski in the early evolution of the Rehabilitation Survey of Problems and Coping. She will be involved in designing the methodology and analytical framework to assess and enhance rehabilitation/treatment success based upon aggregated outcome data from RREES’ comprehensive outcome measurement system.

Consulting Physiotherapist

Aly Mawani is a registered physiotherapist who has most recently provided consulting services throughout the Ottawa region. His expertise has been sought after for both private and OHIP funded clinics as well as industry based problem settings (work conditioning/hardening and ergonomic analysis). Mr. Mawani has also held clinical director positions for several multi-disciplinary companies in Toronto, where he was involved with assessing and treating motor vehicle/work-related accidents. In addition to obtaining a physiotherapy degree, he also has a degree in kinesiology from the University of Waterloo with an emphasis in exercise physiology. Of mutual interest to RREES over the years, he has a strong interest in rehabilitation outcome measurement, particularly in the occupational context. Mr. Mawani has an undergraduate degree in information technology and also remains active in this field.

Consultant in Statistics and Methodology

Daniel J. Denis is in the process of completing his doctoral dissertation at York University with a specialization in applied statistics and multivariate statistical modeling. He also has interests in psychometrics and scale construction. Mr. Denis currently works as a consultant with the York University Statistical Consulting Service. His strengths include the design of research and experiments, the statistical analysis of data, and the interpretation and write-up of results for publication. He is highly skilled in statistical methodology, yet is able to provide simple, meaningful and substantive interpretations of data. He has been involved in scale refinement and reliability and validity analysis of a number of RREES measures, and will also be involved in the methodological design and analysis of aggregate outcome data studies relative to clinical interventions.
